What to Know About the New Expansion to New York’s Javits Center

It’s hosted everything from the New York Comic Con to former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s 2016 election watching party, and in 2021, the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is revealing its long-awaited and much-deserved upgrade. What can convention-goers and exhibitors expect from the new and improved Javits Center once it reopens?

What’s Planned for the Javits Center Expansion

The Javits Center already boasted 1.8 million square feet of space, with just under 1 million (or 840,000) square feet of exhibit space. This expansion will add another 1.2 million square feet of space, significantly increasing the Center’s footprint and providing more flexibility to exhibitors.

As part of this 1.2 million-square-foot expansion, the Javits renovation will add another 90,000 square feet of permanent exhibit space to create a 500,000-square-foot exhibition hall. It will also add 45,000 square feet of meeting room space, ideal for conventions that include breakout sessions or private meetings, and a 55,000 square-foot ballroom slated to be the largest in the New York area. The renovation will add:

  • An additional 27 loading docks
  • Added kitchen and food service area
  • State-of-the-art back of house and administrative space
  • Green roof terrace and 1,500-guest capacity outdoor pavilion

Currently, the Javits Center is the twelfth largest gathering space in the U.S. But once this expansion is completed (currently scheduled for March 2021), it will not only be the largest convention center in New York City but one of the largest in the country.

How Exhibitors Can Prepare

Though it will still be another year or more before the new and improved Javits Center is fully open for business, exhibitors who are planning to attend a convention in the greater NYC area should familiarize themselves with these changes and determine whether any booth upgrades are needed. For example, the incredible natural light in Javits Center lends itself well to open, brightly-colored booths or those with hanging signage that can be seen from the end of an aisle.
