3 Things to Know About the Javits Center Before Your Next Trade Show

For more than three decades, New York City’s award-winning Jacob K. Javits Center has hosted events ranging from the New York Comic Con to the New York International Auto Show. Located in an area of Manhattan known as Hell’s Kitchen, the Javits Center offers the scale and versatility to host just about any show or event in the U.S. In fact, 39,000 companies exhibit at the center each year!

Read on for three facts you’ll want to know before attending your first (or next) trade show at the Javits Center.

A Detailed Floor Plan is Available

Whenever you’re attending a trade show for the first time at a new location, it makes sense to familiarize yourself with the venue before you arrive on site. Fortunately, exhibitors and show attendees can gain access to detailed floor plans of the Javits Center, complete with exhibit hall information, details on private meeting rooms, and also insight about on-site shops such as FedEx (for that last-minute printer run!). It’s easy to get lost in this larger-than-life venue and we highly recommend doing your research ahead of your next show.

Certain Work Must Be Performed By Javits Employees

With more than 170 events per year, the Javits Center is the busiest convention center in the U.S. and it employs over 4,000 people. Because of this quick event turnaround and the Javits Center’s desire to be a good neighbor to its fellow West Side residents, it uses its own union employees to build and dismantle most exhibits. This includes loading, unloading, and transport the exhibits through the Center. Any plumbing or electrical components must also be handled by the convention center’s staff.

Building Work Exhibitors May Do Themselves

Despite strict setup regulations, exhibitors are permitted to erect and dismantle some display booths themselves. These “pop-up” display booths, loosely defined as a self-contained unit that can be hand-carried by a single person, must be less than 250 square feet in total length to qualify for DIY setup. If your booth requires more than two people (or additional equipment, like a dolly) to get from place to place, you’ll need a Javits Center employee’s assistance.
